Too Young ? Too Old?
Jun, Jeri, Zai and I had lunch at Fong Seng Nasi Lemak yesterday. There were many awards displayed, all to do with it being "Best Food'.
So well, after a filling but not very satisfying lunch, we were just relaxing. Ok, the guys were relaxing after they wolved their food. Alright. Jeri wolved his down. Zai... Zai ate less than me!
We girls were eating, when this young punk of a salesman came up to our table.
"Hi, good afternoon to you! Can I talk to you about something?"
No replies. And anyway, he didn't give us time to respond. He unfolded a great big book featuring Nemo from Finding Nemo.
"See this giant colouring book? Outside, it is selling at $20. But now I'll give you a discount. Just $10 for the world's biggest colouring book! Kids like this."
He proceeded to flip open the fully coloured book and brought us through the pages.
Jun and I were just snickering away because the guys were approached.
After deciding that the colouring book did not interest us, he whipped out a tube.
"What about this? See, these are fibre optics that are very pretty. You just turn it on, and there will be red lights and blue lights. It's too bright now so I can't show you properly, but it's really very nice!"
Jun and I had to keep from laughing and choking.
The four of us are in our 20s. Not near having kids. Not near being a kid. But... Zai, Jun and I look young.
As Jun put it later, "Hi Daddy!"

Random Sightings of the Day
- A sea of black. Black pants, black skirt, black suit
- J-pop (or K-pop or Thai) inspired dressing
- Gothic make-up accompanying J-pop dressing
- Billowing white Greek-inspired togas
- Newspaper boy hats 'show'
- A white vintage-looking scooter (a vespa perhaps?) complete with straw hat
- The above contraption on the 3rd floor of SOB
Where's my camera when I need it?!

Alright. I've been tagged early in the morning.
It's entitled: "Name five of life's simple pleasures that you like most, then pick five people to do the same. Try to be original and creative and not use things that someone else has already used".
Long name, but short tag. I'll do this... Also because Jun is next to me now and she'll prob whine to no end if I don't! *sticks tongue out at Jun*
1. Sipping a cuppa hot green tea while sitting at my garden porch on a cool cool rainy day, decked in soft comfy cotton pants and a loose T-shirt
2. Doing the above while sitting on a comfy garden swing with loads of pillows!
3. Cooking a meal as effortlessly and sweatlessly (literally) as Nigella, Kylie or Bob on their shows. And being as creative as Bob. And being as good a cook as them.
4. Travelling around and taking pictures that really capture the essence, emotions and mood of the scene.
5. Finding jeans and shoes with a fantastic snug fit.

No More An Eyebrow Virgin
Oooooh yes... Lil' miss mouse has gone to have her brows plucked and trimmed in a fit of vanity. It smarts lots, especially for first-timers who gamely opt for their brows to be plucked. Leftie is also pretty unhappy that leftie brows have been seen as more droopy and sad than righty brows, thus requiring more plucking. But no one notices unless lil' miss mouse 'fesses up about the eyebrow makeover. So was it successful? Did it make lil' miss mouse's eyes more stunning? Did they frame lil' miss mouse's face better?
The verdict: Lil' miss mouse doesn't know.
In yet another fit of vanity, lil' miss mouse picked up some magazines while in a cab. There was this pull-out on foundation types which lil' miss mouse thought useful. However, due to too much air in lil' miss mouse's head, she did not take it down, thinking that brain matter was very dependable.
To make up for that, lil' miss mouse has gone to find the same info on the Web. However, lil' miss mouse could find nothing vaguely similar to that info. So if anyone has the pullout from CLEO's Jan 2006 issue, lil' miss mouse would be very happy to borrow it.
Till then, lil' miss mouse signs off with a fluorish.

Like a Fish Out of Water
Sometimes, I think it's pathetic. It's pathetic how I feel like part of SMU only when I check my email or go on the oasis or ontrac portal. I don't feel like SMU when I go on the Vista portal. Neither do I feel assimilated into the new location. Seriously, it tires me to have to put on the clock of an SMU student everytime I go to school.
Had a discussion with yc last night, and we came to the conclusion that the latest retro phase of advertisements for the open house is an eyesore. Perhaps yes, it is (or is it 'was') in fashion, but must we follow fashion?
The admin building is isolated from all other buildings now. It used to be accessible by 2 walkways back at OTH.
The website pictures have been changed, erasing all records of us ever being at the Bukit Timah campus.
The new SMU Experience (an utter waste of money as many students from year 1 to year 4 will tell you) has only pictures on the new campus.
What, can the SMU spirit only live on in the new campus? I think the pioneer batch of students embodied the SMU spirit the best. And they were in a dinghy revamped Evans building on Evans road. And there, they embodied the spirit the best.
But where are there? All pictorial records of them have been erased.
Even large pictures that used to adorn the walls of the old campus have now mysteriously gone missing.
I feel like a fish out of water. I have effectively been alienated. I say I'm from SMU, but really deep down inside, I mean to say I'm from the old SMU.
The old SMU where warmth came first followed by being different. Now there are way too many scholars. I think the right risk was taken with the first batch. SMU took a gamble on its pioneer batch which didn't all have stellar results when they came in. Even for the second batch, an applicant with straight As for the A-levels was not admitted, in preference of a student with Bs and Cs. In the third batch, even for the new School of Economics and Social Sciences, students were accepted with less than straight As. Not fantastically stellar results.
The gamble was made, and it paid off. These batches made the foundation, they paved the way. Especially the first two batches. The fourth batch built fantastically on it, but many of them already came in with stellar results.
Too many in the fifth, sixth, and I suspect seventh batch will also possess stellar results when they enter. They will all be the double degree students who have too much to lose by being entrepreneurial.
Perhaps this is just a ranting of a disillusioned old guard. Perhaps... But perhaps it is also a reflection of how fast alienation has been. Alienation has been too effective. Change of President the year before we moved, change in Dean of the business school, renaming the business school to Lee Kong Chian School of Business, renaming the Library (which used to just be called Library) to Li Ka Shing Library. Missing pictures. Changed pictures. No more familiar faces in the pictures to identify with. Pretty boys and pretty girls in the pictures (the pictures used to feature a more varied range of looks).
So if someone asks me where I am studying at, I'll say SMU. But if someone asks me where I'm from, I'll put on a smile and hear a voice saying "I'm from SMU".

Fried rice. A comfort food that has seen and will see many through their childhood, teenagehood, and adulthood. Because of that, many endeavour to cook it, and it is generally a mainstay in most Singapore foodcourts. Hey, fried rice cooks fast, is easy to eat, is chockful of flavour... what more can you ask?
I wanted some comfort food today... but guess what? The uni main foodcourt doesn't have any decent fried rice. And there are so many stalls! I think i shall stick with my Killiney Kopitiam (i still have some hopes that i could find fried rice there).
My source has also told me that fried rice in the Kopitiam at Plaza by the Park is quite good. *rubs hands in glee*
Perhaps I should do a comparison of the fried rice in the various eating establishments around uni... yup, i think that'll be the next topic for XJ's flog! p.s. I'm a freelance writer to her flog. Ahahahahahahaahahahaaha
