This song came to me today. It may be simple, and indeed, it is. 4 lines, simple words. But it was only today that I realised how much truth is held in those simple words!
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see
Grace is what I don't deserve from God. I don't deserve it because I am such a wretched person that I bite the hand that feeds me. I rebel against Him. So blind was I to this evilness and rebellion that I was lost! But now, I see that I rebelled. Now I see how evil I am. Yet, God still created a way for me to be reconciled with Him! Now that's grace... amazing grace.
T'was Grace that taught...my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.
Isn't it ironic that grace teaches us to fear and yet it relieves us of our fears? The day I knew what an evil wretch I was, I feared. I feared the judgement that God could pass on me. But grace. Ah... that sweet sweet grace. God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and rise again. Blood was shed and the price was paid. My price. He paid MY price. He really did not have to... He did not deserve to die! I did! For all my rebelliousness, I deserved death. But no. He died for me. In my place. As my substitute.
And because Jesus rose again from His death 3 days later, the deed was done. What he had done was to give us the gift of grace. Grace that is much needed, and that is enough to reconcile us to God. With that, my fears of judgement were relieved. How precious that grace is! The judgement would be a life without God. Since God is all things good, that means that hell has nothing good. No friends. No parties. No warm bonfire on a frosty night. Nothing. Loneliness. How precious that grace is!
Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.
God's grace brought us through all situations. It is His grace that keeps me going, that keeps all Christians going, even when the going gets tough. He is the one that keeps the world spinning on its axis and not off it.
When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
than when we've first begun.
This grace also brings hope. Hope for the eternity that we can spend with God. Hope for the eternity because of what Jesus has done. Hope for the eternity because the Spirit has given us the knowledge and told us the truth. This hope is heaven! Heaven is everything that is good, because God is there and God is full of goodness and mercy. =)
Will you join me and the family of brothers and sisters in recognising our rebellion? Will you turn to Jesus for the solution and accept that his dying and rising again is necessary and enough to make us right with God? Will you join us in hoping for the day when Christ will come again?

Emerald Uprooted.
SMU has officially started its move to the city campus. It's a really big and grand event. With the media, year long celebrations and loads of publicity, wouldn't it qualify as a big event?
The city campus looks very sleek and savvy, just like what business students should be. I think the architect managed to build in these elements, as well as others of surprise and coziness. It is projected to have the snazziness of a jazz lounge with the mezzanines and skylights and various lighting.
Yet, in spite of all that new snazzy stuff, i'm gonna miss the bukit timah campus. The campus where SMU started out. The campus that SMU revamped. The campus that SMU called home for 5 years. The campus that nestles snugly in the emerald green of botanic gardens.
It was at this campus that i started my university... where we had prayers in the park.. where we jogged through the gardens in an attempt to become more fit... where we had makan sessions peppered with loads of crap... where we stayed late to finish projects that refused to be done... where much of my life was.
Well, i'll always remember those buildings, the walks through botanical gardens and all. And the food... sambal fried rice! I wonder if they're moving to the new kopitiam. Doubt it though...
It's such a strategically located and tastefully done up place that even NTU and NUS were fighting over the building. NUS said it's roots were there... yup it's true. But, i don't remember NUS fighting for the building when NIE vacated it and SMU was considering the building. The building was kind of in shambles then. Really terrible...
Anyway, this goes to show what a wonderful place this campus is. It'll always hold those special memories for me...
