Beauty and Beast

Not your typical Disney movie. In fact, this is a Japanese drama serial and I must say, the storyline is great! It airs every Thursday at 10.45pm to 12 midnight on Mediacorp Channel 8.

Well, today was the first time I watched it, and was I impressed. The storyline revolves around a broadcasting team from JBC Evening News. Their ratings had been going down, and the producer, Makoto had been under pressure to raise ratings. So, she got a new anchor. This new guy is young, suave and handsome.

Things started out well. But soon... this new anchor Kijima let the fame go over his head and was so puffed up. He put down everyone in the studio, including the producer. But as they learnt in training school, the most impt element of a show is 'branding', so she didn't fire Kijima. Lots of tension between the crew and Kijima here. Makes you really want to box that guy...

Then on the day a bank was held up, Makoto decided to extend the news coverage by 30 mins. Due to a lack of information, Kijima had only 3 lines on his script. After saying those 3 lines, he could only go "er... er..." As the crew found info on past bank holdups for him, it dawned on Makoto that the last bank holdup was reported by the anchor that Kijima was replacing. think his name is Surojima... he didn't appear much that's why.

Anyway, Makoto ran to find him and ask him to anchor this special news report of 30 minutes. He did it successfully and so well! It was so smooth, the way he brought up all the previous bank hold ups and facts about them. He also guided the audience through the action and could identify the different people on the ground.

Well, Kijima was sacked in the end and Surojima was asked to stay on at JBC evening news. So, what was so impressive about the last bank holdup reporting? Well, there was also no info about the holdup, but he SINGLEHANDEDLY did a special news broadcast for 3 HOURS!!! Is that good or what? So he became a legend... but after 20 years, people forgot about the legend.

So well, this is the summary of today's episode. Really enjoyed it. Another plus is the feel-good factor after watching the show. Felt like I could really connect since I like journalism and broadcast. But me ish in econs sch haha..

So anyway, it was wonderful to see the humble and unassuming Surojima getting his seat as anchor back, and to see the egoistic and domineering Kijima get the sack.

There's an ice-cream chocolate fondue too, but I seriously don't know how you're gonna get your ice-cream cut into neat little cubes and dip them leisurely in hot melted chocolate to enjoy the treat in Singapore. Sure will try it if i ever end up in a cold country when it's autumn or winter! But in sunny Singapore where the most extreme coldness is wetness? Well... i think i'll pass. Don't want the ice-cream dripping all over me!

Jesus is the Shepherd of my soul. He did not promise me a bed of roses if I follow him; He did not promise a life free of trials if I called myself a Christian. But what He promised me is guidance, and the assurance that He's always there beside me.

Sniff... sniff... Can you smell it?
Listening to a jazzed up version of Christmas songs while studying econometrics. Hmmm... i think the jazz goes better with a nice warm cup of coffee with some cookies, all taken in a nice air-con room, where i can curl up with a good book, or talk to my friends!

But well, now's the time when i have to curl up with my textbooks so... till then... just a bit over a week and i can realize my jazz dreams... (in a million years. gotta repair the air-con first)

Can just smell the aroma of the coffee (with sugar and cream and milk!) and of the cookies. Mmmm.... the Christmas spirit's infectious! But more on Christmas later, after i've finished with my exams. Then it'll prob be 25 days of countdown to Christmas!

Cool, can create something like an advent calendar, just that i won't be opening each window and taking the sweet in each window everyday. Will miss some days coz will be at camp! But till then... it's back to the books

The rest of the class presented their personal portraits today... One girl's personal definition of success: to glorify God in whatever she does. Made me feel really guilty there... coz i didn't dare to say that as my personal definition of success. Yes, i'm scared of persecution... so, sue me. Mentioned church during my own presentation, but did not make a stand for Jesus. I was a coward.

I wonder... will i be able to make a stand on the 23rd? Suddenly feel so vulnerable. A majority vote is required... who will i side? Who should i side? Satan is definitely at work here... Really praying harder than i usually do...

Lord, please grant me a discerning mind and a forgiving heart... and let Thy Will be done.

Mmmmm... Sedap!

Lotsa things are going on... proj, assignments, tests... but still, we gotta eat! Well, just had some interesting meals the last two days. Here goes!

Bak Chor Mee
Visited the branch of Chai Chee Noodle Village at AMK yesterday. Had bak chor mee... delicious, but not fantastic. What I found interesting was that the store front was plastered with raving newspaper reviews and recommendations by TV food shows. Also, they put up a divider to direct the queue. Understandable, coz they're the only stall that has such a long queue at any time of the day.

Wanted to try their $10 abalone noodles, but guess they ran out of it. $10's a hefty price to pay for noodles, so was curious as to how good it really tastes. But for $3, i got a decent bowl of bak chor mee. Recommended, but there are places that whip up bak chor mee with more punch.

However, I much prefer the bak chor mee at AMK ave 4 wet market opposite the YCK Community Centre. Soup tastes better, mushrooms are more succulent.. and it's usually sold out by 1pm. For the early birdies! For this one, you can wait for 30 mins for your food. Recommended!!

Funky Spaghetti
Went to Piazza by Pabulum, situated at Atrium@Orchard. Nice cosy place to have a get-together with friends.

What's hot: Chilli Crab Spaghetti, Soft Shell Crab with Mantou, Hainanese Chicken Spaghetti

What's not: RAVIOLI. Avoid at all costs unless you already like it, or have a penchant for eating food that has an acquired taste, or have a penchant for trying new food.

Was pleasantly surprised by the Hainanese Chicken Spaghetti. The chicken was succulent, the chilli was authentic (but not enough garlic). Still, the amount of garlic in the spaghetti sauce more than made up for the lack of garlic in the chilli. Spaghetti sauce tasted strongly of soya sauce, dark sauce, garlic, and more chilli!

Seriously, this is fusion food in the right direction. And i thought hainanese chicken rice balls (very authentic and traditional) were cool! This is even more modern! BUT... give me a plate of good old chicken rice or chicken rice balls anytime manz... hainanese chicken spaghetti is for once in a while occasions. The rice and rice balls are for daily or regular consumption!
